Not exactly a new purchase, but finally found time to get some photos up of this icon of Stone Island design. Special thanks to Oliverbeer for finally letting go of this beauty. Click below for more pics.

One more off my list. An iconic piece of Paul Harvey design, the Stone Island, Stainless Steel jacket is not exactly practical, but sure is a beauty to look at. Unlike the more common Pure Metal Shell jackets, the woven metal on the Stainless Steel jacket is extremely delicate and prone to rips and snags. So with each outing of it, expect it to come back in worse shape than it left in.

A lot of people have commented on how heavy and loud the woven metal is, but I found it quite light and quiet compared to something like the antique reflective parka.

Left: Close up of a Pure Metal Shell. Right: Close up of the Stainless Steel.

One common mistake is refering to all Pure Metal Shell jackets as the Stainless Steel Jacket. The true Stainless Steel Jacket is a woven metal (shown above right), while the Pure Metal Shell jackets just have a metal coating applied to the outer layer of the fabric.

Above: Removable felt inner lining.

With some of the the more unusual Stone Island jackets, form is usually sacrificed for function. The Stainless is actually quiet surprising in that its one of the better looking SI parkas in terms of length, hood shape and fit. And love the contrast of the rough felt with the metal, but it is very itchy.

    Real beauty,

now I see the difference between “pure metal shell” jackets and this one. I always thought that pure metal shells are not much worth just because every jacket got rips and snags all over.

    Thanks Oliverbeer

I’ve always wanted one of these (and the bronze) simply to display somewhere in the house. Such beautiful design.
