How to Make Art from Ice Camouflage Vests

Been thinking of something to make with the ice camo vest I got from TK Maxx and got an idea after I saw the Taskahi Murakami Exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. Finally got around to finishing the project. Click below to read more.

Unfortunately can’t claim credit for coming up with this. The original idea came from seeing the Murakami LV camouflage canvases at the Brooklyn Museum. Always wanted to get one of these, but with the going price for one at 9,000 - 15,000 USD, thought I’d just make my own. The Brooklyn museum Murakami site is down but you can still see the exhibit online at the MOCA site.

Above: A vintage Stone Island Ice Jacket Gillet(Vest). You can only get one 12″ x 12″ canvas per gillet.
First you will need to source out some of Ice Camo gillets(vests). While the vintage ice jackets are priceless, and still can be quite costly, the gillets can be still found on ebay.co.uk and ebay.it for a relatively cheap price.
Once you find all your gillets, it’s actually pretty simple. You just need a wooden canvas stretcher, a staple gun, glue, and a frame. For mine, I chose a more natural looking spruce wood for the frame. The style of frame I am using is called a “float mount, which gives it a museum feel. If you live in the states can be ordered online from Franken Frames.
One thing to note before you cut up your TK Max ice jackets, they will not give you enough fabric for a canvas. Only an ice gillet will give you a big enough area with no seams to stretch on the canvas.
Check out some pics of the colour change in action.
